The Scottish arch was erected for the royal visit of the Prince and Princess of Wales in Glossop Road. Designed by Councillor Crighton and erected by Mr Gibbs, architect and cost Represents the entrance tower of a castle in imitation stonework. Extreme height 76 feet, and centre arch 26'. Scottish Standard on top of highest tower. In the side arches are two nitches, in each of which is stationed a man in full Highland costume. A long and detailed account can be seen in The Sheffield Independent newspaper. Running over several days it gives detail of preparations as well as vivid details of the two day visit by The Prince and Princess of Wales (16th and 17th August 1875).
