The purpose of the visit was to officially open Firth Park. Mark Firth the Mayor for this year had bought the Page Hall Estate and donated 35 acres of freehold land by a deed of gift to the Sheffield Corporation in trust for the people of Sheffield to be used as a Public Park for ever. A long and detailed account can be seen in The Sheffield Independent newspaper. Running over several days it gives detail of preparations as well as vivid details of the two day visit by The Prince and Princess of Wales (16th and 17th August 1875). The decorated arches along the route are also described.
