Information from Malcolm Nunn, Bradfield Parish Council. This is an image used in slide lectures/ magic lantern shows by photographer Mr. Peacock. His notes to accompany the lectures also included some of his experiences while taking the photograph. We next come to a row of 5 good stone houses called Chapman's Houses, the house nearest the river was occupied and the Chapman's had made it into a storehouse for potatoes. Twenty loads had just been deposited in addition to what was already there. Not one stone of the building was left and of course the potatoes went also. In the second house Daniel Chapman, wife, child, nephew, 2 apprentices and servant- seven in all were drowned. Back and front the waters broke clean through all the walls from foundations to the slates and washed everything away. Thomas Chapman, brother of Daniel occupied the third house with wife, 4 children and servant were arroused by the waters rising in their bedroom. All had a narrow escape, the eldest son endeavoured to climb out of the back window (shown in the photograph) to get onto the roof but a tree floating down struck him and was washed away from the window and drowned. The father then broke a hole through the wall into Daniels's house but found they were all gone and the house in ruins. He then broke through into the house on the other side which was the least damaged of the lot and all the family crept through the opening and were saved. When the water had gone assistance came and the family drenched to the skin were all carried in their night clothes to the Rock Inn up the hill. All the outbuidings were washed away, the horses and cows being lost.
