Information from Malcolm Nunn, Bradfield Parish Council Archivist: This is an image used in slide lectures/ magic lantern shows by photographer Mr. Peacock. His notes to accompany the lectures also included some of his experiences while taking the photograph. The first house that partly withstood the force of the flood was about 100 yards below Bradfield Mill, it was entirely filled with water and as the flood subsided the weight of the water in the house forced one corner of the building out. A little lower a farm occupied by Martin Hawke built close to the waterside with garden and outbuildings were swept entirely away, the family and four lodgers only escaping a few minutes before- Lower down- the High Road for a considerable distance was swept away and rocks torn up and huge stones scattered about.
