Sapper Arthur McClarence was the son of Samuel and Annie Amelia McClarence, of 1 Court, 5 House, Oak Street, Heeley, Sheffield and also Uncle to Sheffield travel writer and journalist Stephen McClarence.

He died on 1st July 1916 [First day of the Battle of the Somme] and is buried at Aveluy Wood Cemetery, Mesnil-Martinsart, France.
