Information from John A Thickitt, photographer: Alberta is hauling a Bradford to Poole (Dorset) express. The engine would be detached at Nottingham and would be kept at Colwick Motive Power Depot until the late afternoon, when it would haul the return journey. This picture was taken on platform 6 at the south end of the station. Being a holiday makersand train (i.e. only running on Saturdays) the service was provided for around two months. During the 1966 season Alberta was the Jubilee usually provided to haul this train. A fortnight after this photograph was taken, the final train of the year was also the last time this train was steam hauled. On todayands return journey the train stalled (i.e. Alberta was travelling so slowly that the wheels could not grip the rails and the train stopped) on the 1 in 50 climb westbound from Barnsley. Eventually, rescue came in the form of a diesel locomotive andbankerand (i.e. assisting 45562 by pushing from the back of the train). The reason for the stall would not have been because of the weight of the carriages forming the train. The diagonal, yellow stripe through the cab side engine number informs that the engine was banned from working south of Crewe, Cheshire. Note the Royal Mail barrow loaded with mail bags on the extreme right.
