Information from John A Thickitt, photographer. The depots at Canklow (Rotherham) and Trafford Park both provided engines for passenger trains between Midland Station and Manchester (Central) Station. By this date these were local trains, providing a service for communities in the Hope Valley and Chinley. A Platform 5 departure also suggests this was a Manchester train. Shown here was a B1 class and so a Canklow engine, one of only two present on this visit. This became the last time I saw any of their engines here.On the extreme left note the barrow, parked against a concrete post showing the station name. These were used by a porter to ferry passengers luggage through the station. Despite the colour-light signal in the foreground, the signal box operated mechanical points and signals. A second signal box was hidden by the train.A postscript: 61315 was re-assigned sometime between February and May 1966, becoming part of Departmental stock and renumbered 32. The new role was unglamorous and confined to the local area. This consisted solely of providing steam heating, presumably for passenger carriages before their first use of the day. No. 32 was noted on 30 October 1966, a recent arrival at Messrs T.W. 'Tommy' Wards scrapyard at Beighton.
