Ron Ironmonger was elected to Sheffield City Council in 1945 and was Leader of the Labour Group from 1966 to 1974 when he left Sheffield Council to become Leader of the newly created South Yorkshire County Council, a position he held until 1979. In 1970 he was knighted and made a Freeman of Sheffield in 1974.
