Information from J Thickitt:

In the foreground the nearer colour-light signal was waiting to be installed and so was turned-away from the track. For the present, immediately behind this another colour-light was still in use. Note the replacement signal had four lens covers, being known as a 'four-aspect' colour-light signal, a more advanced design than the still-active one.

A 'Peak' class diesel was approaching on an express. This was possibly travelling fast as, signals permitting, was often the case with expresses running down the bank from Bradway. This style of approach to Midland Station ceased with track and signal alterations upon the introduction of colour-light signalling.

Note on the right the former 'Slow' lines, often used by trains for the Hope Valley, had been lifted.
