Further information from J Thickitt: View from Platform 1 over the northern-end of the station. Note there were three other signal posts as well as the signal gantry; two behind and one (partially hidden) further away to the right of the gantry, the latter being the signal further from the camera in s42094. The three dark, vertical, pipe-like structures were water columns. The nearest two were conveniently positioned to allow engines to take water while waiting on Platform 1 or Platform 2. Either column was also available to trains passing through on the middle 'road'. The timber building partially visible on the left was Midland Station's North signal box (note the decorative, Midland Railway-style finial on top of the roof).
