The Abbeydale Golf Club, originally called the Dore Golf Club was founded in 1895 by a few residents in Beauchief and Dore, of whom some were members of clubs some distance away and wished to play nearer home. The original links of nine holes was situated at Dore on farm land boardering Ryecroft Glen and extending nearly up o Dore Village. On the farm changing hands in 1897 fresh land had to be sought and the site selected, on which Alec Herd had reported favourably, was that now covered by the nine holes between Beauchief Station and the Abbey.
