Additional information on back of picture from Sheffield Telegraph (undated); It may interest the present generation to know that the narrow street shown in the picture was the Pinstone Street of that time, and was usually called Pinstone Lane. As may be seen, it was very narrow, and as it was the principal throughfare between Sheffield Moor and Fargate, and High Street, it was dreadfully crowded on Saturday night, or on special occasions. Mr. Baines, who is standing at his shop door, was a barber, and also sold guns. The point where the pavement of the left side of the street appears to end abruptly was where one turned to the left into New Church Street, which led to Norfolk Street. On Saturday mornings this was quite a busy place. There were two inns with plenty of stabling and the street would be quite full of farmers carts from Derbyshire. The house on the right of the picture was the Cup Inn and the landlord was Henry Darley. On the opposite end of Fargate was the Green Dragon Hotel, and James Darley was the landlord. |
