Taken from Water-Mills of Sheffield , by Miller, Cat. No. 621.21 S.: Below Upper Middlewood there is a sharp bend in the river which is crossed by the weir feeding the long goit and the high dam for the Middlewood Works at one time known as The Slitting Mill . In these mills the bars were first rolled into strips three or four inches wide and then passed between another pair of rolls with opposing shearing edges which cut the strips into a number of smaller rods approximately square in cross-section; the produce being the raw material for hand-forged cutlery. The plant includes a sheet and rod mill, and at one time contained some water-driven hammers.
