This image was originally part of the Tim Hale Photographic Collection. It was purchased at auction in September 2019 through donations from members of the public and a grant from the Graves Trust.
Dr. Henry Coward on 22nd September 1906 took a choir drawn mainly from Sheffield (149) and Leeds (142) plus another 60 friends and relatives on a tour of Dusseldorf, Cologne and Frankfurt. The touring of huge choirs was common at this time (source: Fifield, C. (2005) Ibbs and Tillett, The Rise and Fall of a Musical Empire , Ashgate Press, p87). |
