Information from Dr Alexander Jackson, Curator, National Football Museum (June 2021): image is of the first known wartime game in Sheffield on Boxing Day 1916, with the estimated 10,000 crowd.

Sheffield Daily Telegraph - Wednesday 27 December 1916 (page 8). Article entitled 'Funny Football' Lady Munition Workers attempt to play the game' 'At the Vickers Sports ground Carbrook, yesterday morning, a match was played between the Lady munition workers employed at Messrs Vickers Ltd. The opposing teams were the East Projectile Shop versus the South [Projectile Shop] (1 and 2) Shops'. Almost 10,000 watched the game, raising £100 for the Wounded Soldiers Fund from ticket sales.

This image was originally part of the Tim Hale Photographic Collection. It was purchased at auction in September 2019 through donations from members of the public and a grant from the Graves Trust.
