Leaving from Platform 1 on a northbound express-passenger train, the engine is probably a Black Five. (Two black-painted oil lamps, one above each of the engine's buffers, identify this as an express). Northbound, through-expresses were often routed into this platform. The carriages appear to be in the early British Railways livery of cherry-red and cream.

Note the engine's tender was full of coal, suggesting this may have been one of the long-distance expresses which were rostered for an engine-change during this station stop.

Beside the train advertising hoardings were peeping over the wall into Sheaf Street.
