From a collection of photographs belonging to Frederick Powell Walton.

Labelled on back: 'Private A. Mottram Abbo killed in action Bourlon Wood, Cambrai, 27 Nov 1917. R.I.P. Also Cpl Deg(?) Warren, killed in action Bourlon Wood, Nov 27 1917. Two of the best'.

Private Albert Mottram (service number: 201363) and Corporal Edgar Warren (service number: 240948) are evidently the men referred to on the back of this postcard. Both men served in the York and Lancaster Regiment and were both killed in action at Bourlon Wood, Cambrai, France on 27 Nov 1917. Private Albert Mottram was aged 24 when he was killed. Mottram enlisted in Sheffield in January 1915 and served in the 4th (Hallamshire) Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment (and was in the 2/5 Battalion at the time of his death). Mottram lived at 7 Court 1 House Boston Street, Sheffield. He was the son of John Frederick Mottram and Mary Agnes (nee Vause). Mottram's mother Mary Agnes later remarried a Benjamin Taylor in Sheffield in 1898 and Benjamin Taylor is recorded as Mottram's 'step-father' on his military service record. Corporal Edgar Warren was aged 21 when he was killed. He served in the 2/5 Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment. He was the son of David and Elizabeth Warren, of 124 King Street, Hoyland, Barnsley.

Both Private Albert Mottram and Corporal Edgar Warren are commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France (panels 9 and 10).
