An inquest was formally opened yesterday by the Sheffield City Coroner (Mr J. Kenyon Paker) on Sultan Mohamed, an Indian recently resident in Sheffield, who was killed in an accident at Beighton Colliery on Monday.   It was stated that the man had a wife and two sons in Rangoon, and used to ends them money regularly. He died in the Royal Infirmary.

The proceedings were adjourned until this afternoon.

It was stated at the inquest, yesterday, on Sultan Mohamed, who was employed at Beighton Pit, and was killed in an accident on Monday, that he had a wife and two boys in India, and used to send money to them.  He died of a fractured skull and injured ankle.

A colliery blacksmith named Metcalfe said that he was on the tip when Mohamed hung with his hands on the traction rope.

The coroner: I have it that he was coming hand over hand along the traction rope.

Metcalfe: I thought he was coming to help us.  There was something wrong with the flight - a car was fast on the aerial ropeway.  The back wheel was off.  Then Mohamed fell on to the tip 20 feet below, and I think he must have hit the bucket.

Wilfred Parson, of 193, Queen’s Road, Beighton, blacksmith’s striker, said he saw the man going along the rope with his hands sideways and then he heard a thud.  When he fell he must have stuck the bucket, which was lying in the tip.

A verdict of 'accidental death' was returned.<br />
