Sylvia Irene Hart was born on 3 Feb 1920. During the Second World War she worked for a number of Sheffield firms contributing to the war effort. In c.1939 she worked at F. J. Brindley and Sons (Sheffield) Limited, Pond Street where she worked on the inspection, oiling and packing of tools. In c.1940 she worked at Firth Browns as a machinist (metal trepanning?). After the Sheffield Blitz, from 1941 and 1944, she worked at Sheffield Twist Drill on a lathe (again, metal trepanning?). She moved to London in 1944. Her mother, Emily Hart (nee Angus) had also been a 'Woman of Steel' during the First World War. Photograph donated as part of the ‘Women of Steel’ campaign. Sheffield City Archives ref.
