Served his apprenticeship at Moss and Gamble as a tilter and forgeman In 1865 he was appointed manager at William Charles and Co., Millsands and progressed to general manager in 1875. In 1880 he started his own business, George Bennett and Co., steel manufacturers, Self Hard Works, Cornish Street. Elected a member of the Sheffield Board of Guardians.
Resided at No. 99 Rock Street.
