Tinsley Viaduct, a triumph of engineering and a salute to the City of Steel, is nearly three-quarters of a mile long, took over three years to build and cost pound;4.5m. High above the Don Valley, linking Tinsley with Meadowhall, its top deck carries the M1 Leeds-Sheffield-London Motorway. Local traffic is seen leaving its lower deck.
This bridge, highest of its kind in Britain, crowned Sheffield's long efforts to become a main trunk road city. For the present, Tinsley is the city's main access to the M1 and, from it, the M18 linking with the A1 Motorway. In the early '70's there will be a pound;5m. city centre spur direct to the M1 at Catcliffe. |
