Completed in September 1990 at a cost of £29 million and built for the World Student Games,Don Valley Stadium is the first completely new sporting venue built outdoors in Great Britain since Wembley in the early 1920s. Sunk 5 metres below ground level the track and infield is illuminated by the strongest floodlight system in the country. Each of the 5 lighting towers is 45 metres above track level and carries a lighting head as tall as a typical 3 storey house (11 metres high). The Grandstand for 10,000 spectators; 15,000 spectators can be accomodated on the open terracing making the seating capacity 25,000.
