The first of the British Railways Standard classes, built soon after the railways were nationalised, the Britannia class were designed for express passenger duties, as is confirmed by the 4-6-2 wheel arrangement (otherwise described as a 'Pacific' type) 70017 was named 'Arrow'.

The line behind the engine was for traffic running along the Hope Valley.
