Notes:

Nothing went to waste. It was July 1940 and boys at Newhall Council School (Intermediate Department) pile scrap metal. Most of the salvage went to making munitions. In most towns workmen set about cutting down the ornate railings in parks and cemeteries for salvage-it was later discovered that this metal was useless.
