Starling, who was born at Pelaw-on-Tyne, won Durham county honours as a schoolboy while at Usworth Colliery, and after playing for Washington Colliery, he joined Hull City while still in his teens. Newcastle United paid a substantial transfer fee for him in 1930, but he did not reveal his best form until he went to the Wednesday two years later. His superb play in leading his side to victory in the Cup Final of April 1935 against West Bromwich Albion, will long be remembered. A great strategist, the tactics he introduced turned the match in favour of his side. He played against Scotland in 1933. |
