Beginning life as a file cutter, Stuart Uttley became an Alderman of the City, a J.P., Secretary of the File Cutters and Forger's Union, Secretary of the Sheffield Federated Trades Council and Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Hearts of Oak Friendly Society. He also served as the first treasurer of Firth Park United Methodist Church.

He died in Sheffield on 27th December 1911, aged 74.
