James Hardcastle (1878-1953), only son of John Hardcastle, surveyor of roads in the parish of Handsworth and registrar of births, marriages and deaths, married Edith Murfitt (born 1879), only daughter of Job Murfitt, postmaster on 14 Jul 1903. James and Edith Hardcastle had a daughter Edith Doreen (born 1905). James Hardcastle worked as a tax collector, estate agent and secretary to the Gas Company. James and Edith Hardcastle were both active members of Woodhouse Wesleyan Church, including the church choir, with Edith Hardcastle becoming choir mistress and James Hardcastle organist.
