Doris Speight was born on 1 December 1924. She worked at Samuel Fox and Company Limited, Stocksbridge from c.1943. She operated a gantry crane. The photograph shows her in late 1944 or early 1945. She was one of just a few women who operated the crane which tipped the molten steel (traditionally a man's task).
