Built 1623 home of the Bright family Mantlepiece in Lower Room. Figure shows Wisdom trampling on Ignorance. From about 1610-20 (approximate day of erection) until about 1885 the figure of priest shown carved in high relief had a solid gold ring on the forefinger. Inscriptions on the scrolls: Be not as a horse and mull which have no understanding; Understanding reacheth heaven; Understanding is a wel-spring of life; Good understanding depart from evil; Ignorance is a beast. |
