Born 2 Aug 1888 at Glemsford, Suffolk.

Elected a Councillor for Manor Ward, Jan 1942, and an Alderman of the City, May 1952 (until May 1967).

Member of the Education Committee, Nov 1926 to May 1967(Co-optative member to Jan 1942). Chairman of the Committee, 1954 - 1957 and 1958-1967.

Lord Mayor of the City, 1957 - 1958.

Chairman of Board of Governors, United Sheffield Hospitals, 1948 – 1963.

Created Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) 1955.

Member of the Council of Sheffield University, 1945 - 1967.

Honorary LL.D., Sheffield University, 1959.
