Image from Photographs from the Sheffield Daily Telegraph, 1914-1917 vol. 3 (Local Studies 940.43 SSTQ) Harry Epworth Allen was born at 20 Kirkstall Road, Hunter's Bar on 27 November 1894. He joined the Royal Garrison Artillery in 1915. In June 1916 he was posted to the British Expeditionary Force to France. He worked as assistant to the observation officer, sketching enemy equipment and locations in the field. In August 1916 he was moved to the front-line. In 1917 he was awarded the Military Medal for conspicuous gallantry. He was badly wounded during the incident, and subsequently had a leg amputated, whilst his other leg was seriously injured by shrapnel. He was recognised as one of the Yorkshire Artists Group. After a successful career as an artist he died at home on 25 March 1958 at 67 Banner Cross Road.
