Colonel Charles Clifford donated the land for the Sheffield Dental Hospital. Benefactor of dental services in Sheffield, the Charles Clifford Dental Hospital which opened on Wellesley Road in 1953 was named after him. Born in London in 1860 he came to Sheffield in 1878. He established the Sheffield Evening Telegraph in 1888. He became Lieutenant Colonel of the 3rd West Riding Brigade Royal Field Artillery in 1909. He was responsible for many of the improvements made at the Brigade's Edmund Road Drill Hall and helped to acquire the Redmires Race Course as a training ground. He had a distinguished military career during the 1st World War. Married Alice Emma Davy and lived at Clifford House on Ecclesall Road South.
