Chairman of the Dental Board of the Royal Hospital, prominent Freemason, elected member of the Bramall Lane Bowling Green in 1869, and a member of the Ground Committee in 1875; 1877 member of the Yorkshire County Cricket Club Committee. Joined Heeley (Christ Church) Football Club in 1864, aged 16; 1868 secretary of the Milton Club; Treasurer of the Sheffield Football Association since 1887, chairman of Sheffield United Football Club; prominent member of the Broomhall Football Club, also helped form the Sheffield Wednesday Football Club.
