Named in memory of Jeffie the wife of Emerson Muschamp Bainbridge, a mining engineer, director of several railway companies, a strong supporter of the Sheffield Canal and MP for Gainsborough. The building was opened by the Duchess of Portland in December 1894. The upper floors had a dining room and dormitories together with offices for the NSPCC. Its aim was to provide shelter and meals for the poor and waif children of the city. Later tickets for meals were distributed among the teachers of schools in the poor districts.
