View north. The group on the right of the photograph were, without doubt, railway enthusiasts. This would very probably have been an officially sanctioned visit (because of the numbers involved, all standing at leisure together). Simply standing in a group on the edge, it was likely the tour leader was in the act of presenting a 'shed pass' for the Shed Master's inspection. When he returned the group would have split up.Note; there was only one in-steam engine in the part of the shed-yard visible in the photograph: more can be seen peeping-out of the shed building. The absence of smoke escaping from the structures on the roof, which were ventilators, show the engines inside were 'dead'. Therefore, this visit occurred on a Sunday.Information from J Thickitt.Built by the Midland Railway in 1901 and closed in January 1962.
