From R. Smith's Old Sheffield Cuttings, Vol. 5.The Standard class of engine were designed by British Railways. This class were moderately powerful and for mixed traffic use (meaning suitable for both passenger and freight trains) Sometimes they are described as the 'BR5' class, five being the power classification. Note the oil lamps on the front of the engine, temporarily attached above each buffer. Known as the 'headcode' in this pattern they show the engine was on an express passenger train.Information from J. Thickitt.
