Information from John A Thickitt: The wagon coupled to the engine is called a hopper-waggon. Coal rails (i.e the horizontal bars running around the top of the waggon) have been fitted to increase its carrying capacity. The engine looks in its original condition not yet having been modernised. One of the concequences of WWII for the railway was a deteriorationin the quality of locomotive coal. Here, along with some larger coals there is a lot of slack (i.e very small particles of coal) visible in the tender. |
