John (Jack) Pickering (1908 - 1977), inside left, Sheffield United Football Club, 1925 - 1948 | |

1920-1939 | |
No. 35 in the Association Footballers series, W. A. and A. C. Churchman. This photograph was issued with Imperial Tobacco Company cigarettes. Description on reverse of card reads J[ohn] Pickering (Sheffield United). Throughout his long career with Sheffield United, John Pickering has had no rival for the inside left position and it is notable that although playing as a professional he works in an accountants office and does his training in the evenings. He went to Bramall Lane in his teens and no one has been able to persuade him to leave. In 1933 he was England's inside left against Scotland and 3 years later he played a conspicuous part in helping to take Sheffield United into the Cup Final in which they were narrowly beaten by the Arsenal. Finely built, he has a long stride and is deceptive in pace. Pickering also has a strong shot. |
