He was born in London and decided to dedicate his life working in healthcare after his experiences of hospitals as a boy. He moved to Sheffield in 1964 to study medicine at the University.
He became an expert in lymphoma, gestational trophoblastic disease and biological therapy. He received an OBE ‘for services to medicine’ in 2009. He also received the Lord Mayor of Sheffield's 1999 New Year honours award 'for services to the community beyond the call of duty' and in 2005 Sheffield University’s Centenary award ‘for outstanding achievement'. In 1988 he was appointed to Sheffield’s first Chair of Oncology.
