Daughter of Joseph Read (1774-1837) of Wincobank Hall and an aunt of Henry J. Wilson (1833-1914).

Mary Anne Rawson was a prominent anti-slavery campaigner who founded the Sheffield Female Anti-Slavery Society and was Secretary of the Sheffield Ladies Association for the Universal Abolition of Slavery.
