Wife of Henry J. Wilson (1833-1914) of Osgathorpe Hills, Pitsmoor, Director of Sheffield Smelting Company, JP and radical Liberal MP for Holmfirth. Daughter of Charles Cowan, MP for Edinburgh. In Sheffield, Charlotte Cowan Wilson helped to found the House of Help for Friendless Girls and Young Women (serving on its committee from its foundation in 1885 and becoming president of its executive committee). She was also on the sub-committee for befriending young servants, to which Sheffield Guardians entrusted the care of young girls placed in service from the workhouse. She also served on the committee of the Sheffield Women's Christian Temperance Association and helped to found the Women's Police Court Mission. For many years she was Honorary Secretary (and later President) of the Brightside Women's Liberal Association. She was also a member of the Council of the Sheffield Women's Liberal Association. She also served on the Central Committee of the National Council of Women (formerly the National Union of Women) and was the first President of the National Women’s Total Abstinence Union.
