Theatre Royal, Sheffield. Lessees Messrs. Wolfenden and Melbourne, 25, Arundel Street. Will open on Friday evening, April 23rd, 1858 under the patronage of Col. Harding, C.B. And the officers of the 22nd Regiment, for the benefit of a soldier and family who has been compelled to leave the army after serving his country faithfully for 18 years, in consequences of ill health. All those who patronise the above evening, are most respectfully informed that this is one of those cases where the honest and faithful soldier is borne down by real and unavoidable affliction. First appearance of The celebrated dog, Hero pronounced by the press to be the most sagacious animal in England. The evenings entertainments will commence with an interesting drama, entitled The ReturnFrom the Wars! Or, a Maidens Vow. [Followed by] A favourite dance by Miss Ashton. To be followed by the celebrated drama entitled the Soldier and His Dog Incidental to the drama:- Terrific conflict between the soldier and the robber of the Black Forest. Timely arrival of the dog … preservation of the Count and his family by the dumb girl. General conflict between the troops and the robbers! Grand tableau. To conclude with the lovable farce of Mischief Making! Or, The Washerwomen of St. Remy. [Performers]: Miss Ashton, Mr James Bownes, Miss Charlotte Cook / Cooke, Mr A. Denial, Mr Finch, Mr E. Furniss, Mr Grey, Mr J. Harrison, Mrs Hemmings, Miss Frost, Mr Jones, Miss Fanny Morelli, Mr Proctor, Mr H. Rivers, Miss Roberts, Mr Shaw, Mr Smith, Miss Stevens, Mrs H. J. Turner. Stage Manager Mr H. Rivers. Children in arms not admitted. Doors open at seven o'clock to commence at half-past. Admission: Boxes 2s. 6d., Stalls, 1s 6d., Pit 1s., Gallery 6d.
