Sir,

As the termination of your second year as office of mayor of this borough is fast approaching, we the undersigned Members of the Council [40 names] beg most respectfully to ask that you will allow us to nominate you for mayor again for the ensuing year.

We regard this manifestation of our respect as but an appropriate recognition of your unwearied services in every possible way for the public benefit of the inhabitants of this large borough.

We believe you to be entitled to this distinction for the great efforts you have made to place Sheffield in her proper position amongst the large towns of this kingdom and we pledge ourselves, if you comply with our wishes, to render you all the support and assistance in our power, both on the day of election and in the performance of your high and important duties.
