The Sheffield Wednesday Cricket Club was formed in 1820. It derived its name from the fact that the tradesmen (the 'little mesters') who set up the club had Wednesday as their 'off' day (their earliest opponents included the Thursday and Friday Clubs). Sheffield Wednesday Football Club began life as an offshoot of the cricket club and was formed following a meeting at the Adelphi Hotel on 4th September 1867 with the aim of keeping the cricketers together during the winter months. The success of the football club eventually led to it breaking away from the cricket club in 1883.
