By Telegraph.The Fearful Calamity at Sheffield.In some streets in Sheffield the debris is piled up 8 or 10 feet high and among it is found fragments of furniture and many dead bodies - for more than hour the streets near the river were 3 or 4 yards deep in water. Great numbers of men are now engaged getting dead bodies out of houses where they have been drowned in Bed.Others are being gathered in from gardens into which they have floated. The water at the height of the inundation was like a mighty river. Gas Lamps were thrown down and clinging to one of them was the dead body of a man. The torrent also found its way into the Midland Station where at daylight the bodies of 4 females were found all in their night dresses. The excitement in the town cannot be described. Business in fact is at a stand still because the extent of the mischief cannot be ascertained. The Dam was a new one.Original at Sheffield City Archives: MD1878/5.
