Gaskell and Chambers Ltd. made the Dalex stainless steel engine allowing beer to be pumped staright from the cellars though atinless steel pipes, allowing even cider to be dispensed without corroding the pipes. The main factory, which was in Birmingham, had 4 cabinet and joinery works making everything for the modern bar of the time like bar fittings, drink dispensing equipment and furniture tailor made to suit each room individually. Because many of the fittings were made of stainless steel, pewter and copper this may explain the connection with building this workshop in Sheffield to make use of a skilled metalworking craftsman available in the city.
