There are around 30 mature Fig Trees by the River Don mostly towards Meadowhall end of the Five Weirs Walk. The majority of which are over 60 years old and owe their existance to a combination of human appetite, imperfect sewage and the steel industry. Each time there is a heavy storm a proportion of sewage overflows into the River system. At the turn of the 20th century because of industry the waters of the East End were at a constant 20 degrees creating the perfect conditions for the fig seeds to germinate and grow.
