Picture taken from Illustrated London News, 1857. The bears in the bear pit can be seen to the right of the picture on the platforms of a tree. The bear pit seems to have been in the gardens when they were opened in 1836. Bears were still there until about 1870, when according to a letter to a newspaper, a nurse held a child over the railings to see the bears and was either dropped by the nurse or clawed to death by the bears.
