Edith Hoole was born in Sheffield in 1850, daughter of Charles Hoole (1805 - 1876) of Hallam Gate, Crookes, a successful grocer who also served as director of both Sheffield Gas and Water Companies. Edith Hoole married Arthur Wightman (1842 - 1924), solicitor, on 21 September 1872 at St Thomas' Church, Crookes. Edith later lived with Arthur Wightman at Hallam Gate, the family home where she had grown up. Latterly, Edith Wightman resided at 8 Beech Hill Road, Broomhill. She died in Sheffield in 1943, aged 93, Following her death, she left bequests to the Firths Almshouses in Sheffield and also to Sheffield Royal Hospital, Sheffield Royal Infirmary, Jessop Hospital for Women and the Sheffield Children's Hospital. She left her home to the Vicar and Churchwardens of St Mark's Church, Broomhill for us as a residence for the Vicar.
