Sheffield Association in aid of the Adult Deaf and Dumb was established in 1862 with the aim of promoting the wellbeing of the deaf and dumb and assisting them in obtaining employment. Originally using premises in Division Street it moved to purpose built premises in Charles Street in the 1890s. Demolished 1966.
The font, made by a member of the Association, was installed at the Institute's premises in 1911.
